No sandwiches made with potentially tainted meat: company owner/operator

Recall was a matter of going 'above and beyond' what was expected, she said

BOWMANVILLE --- No sandwiches were ever made with potentially listeria-contaminated meat at William Davids and the recall of food made at the Bowmanville facility was a matter of going above and beyond what was necessary, says the company's owner-operator.

The Bowmanville company had received meat produced by Les Salaisons Desco Inc., which has been forced to recall product due to possible contamination with listeria monocytogenes. That's the same bacteria that closed down a Maple Leaf plant in August and is being blamed for the deaths of as many as 20 people across Canada.

William Davids had received possible affected roast beef from its distributor, but before that meat was used in any sandwiches, the local company received word to dispose of it, said William Davids owner/operator Judy Mosier.

"There is not any product of ours that is out in the field that may contain that potentially contaminated meat," she said Monday morning.

The recall of locally produced sandwiches is a matter of going above and beyond what is really necessary, Ms. Mosier said.

"To work hand-in-hand with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, we did a voluntary recall of roast beef products that would have been produced" during the affected dates -- despite the fact the roast beef in question had already been tossed, she said.

"The meat that may have been contaminated with the listeria monocytogenes was disposed of (before use in sandwiches) as we were told to do."

Ms. Mosier stressed the sandwiches under recall were not produced with the potentially contaminated meat.

"Those sandwiches were not made with that meat, because there was none of that meat to make sandwiches with, because we'd already disposed of it," she said.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a food-borne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness. However, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
