September car sales good for import nameplates

Oct 02, 2008 - 11:58 AM

DURHAM -- Cars with import nameplates had a decent sales month in September, but the same was not true of American-based autos.

Overall, overseas-based automakers' sales were up 7.8 per cent compared to September 2007, while the big three auto makers, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, saw sales decrease by 4.7 per cent.

The Detroit-based companies are down 6.4 per cent year-to-date, while import sales are up almost 10 per cent for the year.

The biggest percentage increase in sales in September came for the Smart car. The vehicle sold 301 units in September 2008, compared to 31 units in 2007, an increase of 871 per cent.

Other market sales winners for September included Audi, Infiniti and Jaguar.

The most significant dip in sales for the month was for Porsche where sales dropped 37.5 per cent compared to the same month last year.
