Repatriation for fallen soldier Wednesday

Sep 09, 2008 - 12:16 PM

DURHAM -- A repatriation ceremony for the latest Canadian soldier to fall in Afghanistan is expected to pass through Durham Region Wednesday afternoon.

Sergeant Scott Shipway, a decorated member of the Second Battalion of the Princess Patricia Light Infantry, died Sunday when his armoured vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in Kandahar province. He is the 97th Canadian soldier to die in the Afghanistan mission.

A military plane carrying Sgt. Shipway's remains is expected to arrive at CFB Trenton at 2 p.m. and following a military ceremony a motorcade will travel along Hwy. 401 to Toronto. It's expected the procession will pass through Durham at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Durham residents have consistently lined overpasses and ramps along the newly-named Highway of Heroes for repatriation ceremonies during the conflict.
