Louisianna man accused of threatening finance minister

WHITBY -- While his political colleagues were hitting the campaign trail Tuesday, federal finance minister and Whitby-Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty was scheduled to be in Louisiana, testifying against a man accused of threatening him.
Lloyd Dewitt Tiller Jr., 59, was charged by authorities in the U.S. after Mr. Flaherty allegedly received threatening e-mails last year. The stockbroker was upset over the Conservative government’s backtracking on a promise not to tax income trusts, according to a report in the Shreveport Times.
Mr. Tiller is charged with two counts of sending a threatening interstate communication. The messages relayed threats against Mr. Flaherty and his family, according to an indictment.
The Times reported Tuesday that Mr. Tiller has admitted sending the e-mails but that he insisted he never planned to follow through on his threats.
The trial is expected to conclude this week. If convicted, Mr. Tiller faces up to five years in prison, according to the Times.
