'Have to work harder at the doors'

PICKERING -- We live in a bloated democracy, says the Pickering-Scarborough East Green Party candidate after learning his party’s leader, Elizabeth May, cannot participate in the leaders debates.
“They’re silencing our voice,” Jason Becevello said in an interview.
Canada’s broadcasters (composed of CBC, CTV, Global and TVA) announced Monday that Ms. May will not participate in the debates after the Conservative, NDP and Block Quebecois parties were opposed to her inclusion.
“It became clear that if the Green party were included, there would be no leaders’ debate,” the consortium of networks said in a press release, adding in the interest of all Canadians, it’s better to broadcast the debates with the four major party leaders, not all of them.
In order to work around the highly-watched debates, Mr. Becevello said his party will have to work hard at the doors.
“We’re going to have to get the word out,” he said, adding it poses the question as to how voters feel about the decision.
“The network executives aren’t elected by everyone so it just goes to show we don’t have free and fair media,” he said.
Doug Anderson, Green Party candidate for Whitby-Oshawa, declined to comment until he had more information on the decision.
The debates will take place Wednesday, Oct. 1 and Thursday, Oct. 2.
