Scugog brings back popular 'Urban Poling' program

Aug 27, 2008 - 11:06 AM

SCUGOG -- Scugog residents have given their stomp of approval to one of the municipality's newest fitness programs, prompting the Township to offer a fall session of the popular 'Urban Poling' practise at the Scugog Community Centre.

A staple in some European fitness regimes for decades now, the workout known as 'Urban Poling' will return to the community later this month when Scugog's Parks, Recreation and Culture Department offers an encore presentation of the well-embraced fitness program.

Once again, the Township will offer two, eight-week urban poling sessions, which will be based out of the Scugog Arena at 1655 Reach St. The first session will be held Monday evenings, running Sept. 15 to Nov. 10 from 7 to 8 p.m. A second segment will be hosted on Friday mornings, from Sept. 19 to Nov. 7, running from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Participants will have an opportunity to stroll around the community arena as well as the complex's parking lot and nearby trails. There will be a maximum of 15 participants in each session.

The municipality has once more partnered up with the firm Body Design to offer the specialized pole-walking program. Instructors with Body Design will be on hand during the sessions to oversee the program.

Pole-walking is rapidly gaining popularity across Canada since it combines the aerobic and strength-building benefits of cross-country skiing with the cardio effects of power walking. The science behind a walking stick is that it aids in balance and forces participants to work their core muscles. This cardio-muscular exercise engages a variety of body parts and offers a full-body workout so participants end up burning more calories, reducing stress on their joints, improving posture and developing better overall body coordination.

Poling is a year-round, dynamic activity designed for both urban settings (sidewalks and street surfaces) and snow or off-road surroundings (hiking trails) -- aptly suited to diverse Ontario climates and terrains.

Each session costs $78, plus GST.

For more information or to register, contact Craig Belfry, the Township's manager of culture and recreation, at 905-985-8698, extension 102, or e-mail cbelfry@scugog.ca. Those interested in the program can also register with the parks, recreation and culture department office at the Scugog arena.
