OSHAWA -- The Durham police canine unit hunted for a suspect after a bank robbery in east Oshawa this afternoon.

Sergeant Steve Jones said police officers detained a man who matches the suspect’s description near the intersection of King Street east and Townline Road North. However it was not the man they were seeking.

The robbery took place just before 1:30 p.m. at the TD Canada Trust branch in the Kingsway Village Shopping Centre. No one was injured and it’s not known if the suspect, a 20-to-30-year-old man, got away with any cash.

He certainly didn’t get the reply he was looking for when he approached a teller.

“Somebody at the bank told the guy to get lost and come back later,” said Sgt. Jones. “It’s not verbatim, but that’s the gist of it.”

He had little information as the investigation is ongoing.

However, a local couple had a front-row seat to the whole incident, even if they weren’t together at the time.

For some reason, an Oshawa woman took note of the young man who walked by her car Saturday afternoon as she waited in the parking lot of the shopping centre. Her husband was inside the bank and called seconds later.

“Looks like I’m going to be a while, the bank was robbed,” he told her. “I’m OK.”

The woman, who would only identify herself as Judi, asked him if the robber was wearing a blue shirt. When her husband, Fred, confirmed it, she realized it was the same person who had passed her car moments earlier.

She added that the suspect had dark hair and was wearing dark sunglasses. While he was wearing a baseball cap inside of the bank, when he left he took it off. Judi said the man was in no hurry, walking nonchalantly past her to a car a few rows away.
