First storm of season heads toward Durham
Nov 30, 2008 - 12:01 PM
A winter storm alert for southern Ontario has been issued by Environment Canada.
The alert, issued at 9:12 a.m. Sunday, calls for "dangerous winter weather conditions."
The storm is composed of an Alberta clipper located over Indiana Sunday morning and a developing Texas-Louisiana low that is expected to
move up the eastern seaboard of the United States.
These two
systems will combine to give anywhere from 10 to 25 centimetres of snow
for most regions, a news release from Environment Canada said.
"Wet snow mixed with rain will begin to affect
southwestern Ontario this afternoon and into eastern and central
Ontario this evening," it said. "As temperatures are hovering near zero, the
elevation of the region will be a factor for the type of precipitation."
The
Golden Horseshoe will see wet snow, changing to rain, then back to wet
flurries Monday, with snow amounts of about five centimetres in the city
centres and as much as 15 centimetres over higher ground away from the lake.
Eastern Ontario is a little more uncertain, as
the Texas-Louisiana low intensifies along the eastern seaboard. The Ottawa and St. Lawrence valleys could see a mixed bag of wet
snow ice pellets and some freezing rain. Accumulations may be reduced
somewhat over eastern Ontario due to the mixed precipitation.
Durham may experience some rain and five to 10 centimeres of snow from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning.
Strong
winds are also possible with this type of winter storm and may
blow tree limbs covered in wet snow onto power lines, causing potential
power outages, the release said.
Motorists
should be prepared for dangerous winter driving conditions and alter
travel plans accordingly. Low visibility in heavy snow and local
blowing snow could be possible in this storm.
