Barbershop chorus director gets scholarship for college course

DURHAM -- The director of the Horseless Carriagemen, Durham's barbershop chorus, has qualified to receive a scholarship to attend Barbershop Harmony College this summer. Kim Alexander recently found out she has qualified for the scholarship for the college in St. Joseph, Mo. Only a handful of scholarships are awarded by the International Barbershop Harmony Society each year. To qualify, Ms. Alexander had to undergo extensive testing. She had to be able to recognize a four-part harmony chord and what it takes to balance chords to achieve the barbershop sound, undergo vocal pedagogy testing, music theory testing and submit a directing video. During the week at the college, July 26 to Aug. 3, she will receive training from some of the society's top composers, directors, arrangers and visual entertainment specialists. There will be directors from all over the United States, Canada and other countries at the college. The local chapter consisting of about 50 men who practise every Monday night during the year except holiday Mondays. Anyone interested can attend at Glen Stewart Park Clubhouse, corner of Cartier and Cabot streets in Oshawa to find out about this unique style of singing.
