DURHAM -- Motorists can expect the Ontario Provincial Police to be out in full force this weekend, patrolling roads packed with holiday travellers, said OPP commissioner Julian Fantino.

"Our goal is to keep our communities and our families safe," Mr. Fantino said, adding officers will be cracking down on aggressive drivers, impaired drivers and those who aren't using their seatbelts.

Ontario has some of the toughest penalties in Canada to combat excessive speeding, including increased fines for street racers that can add up to $10,000, immediate roadside suspension of driver's licence and roadside vehicle impoundment when racing or stunt driving is suspected. Police and media reports indicate street racing has contributed to 41 deaths in Ontario since 1999.

"Ontario will not tolerate excessive speeders or aggressive driver behaviour," said Transportation Minister Jim Bradley. "Our message to these drivers is simple -- you will be caught and you will pay the consequences."

About 50 per cent of roadside suspensions and vehicle seizures are a result of drivers speeding at 50 kilometres or more above the limit. Police also warn that 30 per cent of fatal crashes involve aggressive driving, driving too fast and other improper driving behaviour. They urge everyone to drive safely this weekend, when roads will be extra busy with holiday travel.

"This weekend, and always, I urge all Ontarians to drive responsibly and help keep Ontario's roads among the safest in North America," said Community Safety and Correctional Services Minister Rick Bartolucci.
