Help wanted in treasury department

Uxbridge to advertise for new manager

May 08, 2008 - 11:07 AM

UXBRIDGE -- The treasury department is looking to manage new responsibilities, and is looking for a new manager.

An additional position within the department was approved during 2008 budget talks. Al Shultz, treasurer, said the new individual is needed "due to the increased reporting requirements bring placed on the treasury department." Commencing next year, all municipalities will be required to report on tangible capital assets said Mr. Shultz in a report to Uxbridge's finance committee. Currently, tangible capital assets, such as roads, bridges, buildings and land, "are neither reported on the balance nor are they depreciated over the life of the assets," he noted.

The new rules would require municipalities to keep track of assets much the same way as commercial enterprises do, noted Mr. Shultz. "It will be necessary to inventory all these assets and determine to proper cost to be recorded for these assets," he stated. "Policies will have to be developed for determining what depreciation methods should be used."

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of computer systems. "This position would also be responsible for coordinating all the treasury computer needs with third party providers," noted the treasurer.

In addition, the selected applicant will assist in the preparation of financial statements and budgets.

The job is to be advertised on the Township website, www.town.uxbridge.on.ca., with the hired individual likely starting work in July, said Mr. Shultz. In the budget, $45,000 was set aside to cover six months of wages for the new position, based on salaries paid by other municipalities for similar work. But the actual salary for the position will be determined through a "job evaluation process", said Mr. Shultz.
