UXBRIDGE -- A planned GO station that will serve Uxbridge residents is scheduled to be completed soon.

According to a report from GO Transit, the new station, to be constructed in Stouffville at 10th Line and Bethesda Road near the Uxbridge/Stouffville border, is scheduled for completion in June. The contract to build the station, at a cost of $5,477,000, was awarded to Loc Pave Construction Ltd. in Gormley.

The station will initially feature a 140-space parking lot, kiss and ride, bus loop, accessible customer loading platforms, and automated ticket vending. There is room for another 1,200 parking spaces if required.

The station is being built "as a result of the increasing customer growth along the Stouffville corridor," reads the report.

Meanwhile, Uxbridge is faced with a future growth freeze due to sewage capacity constraints and is examining ways to accommodate development brought on by the GO station. Richard Vandezande, manager of development services, made mention of a "planned GO station for the Uxbridge urban area" in a Feb. 26 report to council, although GO officials confirmed only one station in the Uxbridge area is currently in the works.

Mr. Vandezande noted the station "will enhance the development potential and intensification opportunities in the core area of Uxbridge (and) will also enhance the goal of the regional plan to encourage growth in regional centres, one of which is identified as downtown Uxbridge. Both of these initiatives need to be supported by an appropriate servicing plan if these opportunities are to be realized."
