Pickering writer's work goes Hollywood

Seeking a slacker for fringe festival play

Feb 05, 2010 - 04:30 AM

DURHAM -- If you have Hollywood dreams, a local playwright might be able to help you make them come true.

Pickering resident Briannne Hogan's Back to You: A Dear John (Mayer) Letter is premiering at the first Hollywood Fringe Festival in June. And she's holding auditions in Toronto next weekend to cast two roles.

"Tired of his tabloid tenure as Hollywood's Mr. Wrong, (John Mayer, the singer) sets out to find his long-lost Japanese summer school love, Rihanna (no, not that one) to right his romantic wrongs," Hogan describes the play in an e-mail. "Inevitable hijinks ensue when Rihanna's pals, Carly and Calvin, learn of their forbidden love and realize their own artistic careers could benefit from a Mayer-iffic meeting, and do everything in their power to make it happen -- even if it means creating a 'Heartbreak Warfare'."

Hogan is seeking actors to play Calvin, whom she describes as "27 years old, office mule by day, blogger by night (think Perez), gay, cynical, jaded by celebrity but really a closeted fame monster."

The actor "must be very good with dialogue and great comic timing. Also would help if he can do a killer Jessica Simpson impression, or at least can do southern accent."

As for Mayer, Hogan says, "We see him as an 18-year-old slacker to now (32 years old), so this guy must kinda resemble John or at least be able to embody his nature. Most importantly, though, is that he can play the guitar (or fake it really well)."

Auditions are Feb. 13 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Harbourfront Community Centre in Toronto, 627 Queen's Quay W. (at Bathurst Street).

All actors are to be 21 years of age or older and those interested must e-mail their headshots and resumes to backtoyou_theplay@yahoo.ca. After they are received, more information and appointment times will be set up.
