UXBRIDGE -- The story of Christmas will unfold in Uxbridge this December.
'Living Nativity', sponsored by the Uxbridge Baptist Church, will be presented in Uxbridge's Centennial Park, with the first show scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7:15 p.m. and another that day at 8:30 p.m. Organizer Joan Wideman said the production will "recreate the village of Bethlehem and present the wonderful story of Christmas with a cast of over 130 people" with an additional 25 to 30 people looking after the set, sound and lighting, costumes, and other responsibilities.
The first Nativity show was in downtown Uxbridge in 1974, and ran every year for five years, said Ms. Wideman. "The Township would close the road and there was nowhere to sit," she said, comparing the original location to Centennial Park where space is more abundant and bleachers are provided. The production began running every other year starting in 1984, she added.
Humans are not the only stars of this show, noted Ms. Wideman. "The kids love to see the sheep, goats, chickens, calves, ponies and horses," she stated. The animals are provided for the show by local farmer Rob Evans, she said. The costumes, all made by volunteers, are made large enough so actors can wear snowsuits underneath to fight the cold. Enough costumes have been made over the years to dress 175 people.
The show is gaining popularity over time, said Ms. Wideman. "Every (two years) our attendance has grown -- in 2005, well over 5,000 people were in attendance over the four evenings," she said.
Living Nativity continues Dec. Friday, Dec. 14 to Sunday, Dec. 16, with two shows each day also at 7:15 and 8:30 p.m. "We are pleased that due to sponsorship and our team of volunteers, there is no cost to attend these presentations, it is our gift to you this Christmas," said Ms. Wideman.
Ms. Wideman said those willing to lend a hand for the production are still welcome to contact organizers. For more information on Living Nativity, or to volunteer, call Joan Wideman at 905-261-4417, Brian Evans at 905-852-3184 or Uxbridge Baptist Church at 905-852-3662.
