Pedestrians should stay on the sidewalks

October 16, 2008

To the editor:

What is it with people walking on roadways around this city?

I'm getting more than a little tired of having to dodge idiots who choose not to walk on the sidewalk on side streets around here.

The road is for cars. It's not a wide promenade. Is there perhaps a reciprocal agreement in place that I'm not aware of?

Am I allowed to drive on the sidewalk now?

The real kicker here is that they almost defy you to hit them and they give you a dirty look if you don't afford them a wide berth.

You don't have an inherent right to stroll down a roadway, especially when a sidewalk exists. Get a grip.

To all the people who don't know what a sidewalk is for, I ask you this: In a collision between you and a 1,500-pound machine, who do you think will come out the loser?
