BOWMANVILLE -- September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month in Canada, and several local events are planned to celebrate.
The celebration kicks off with a picnic for Bigs and Littles and volunteers and staff at which the Royal Bank of Canada, Durham Market, will present the local agencies with a cheque for $25,000. Both Oshawa-Whitby and Clarington agencies will get $10,000, while North Durham will receive $5,000. The money will directly support mentoring programs. The celebration continues Sept. 19 with Big Brothers and Sisters of Clarington's 12th annual Golf for Kids' Sake tournament at Newcastle Golf Course. The tournament begins with an early bird lunch, donated by M and M Meats, followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. For $130, each golfer will receive lunch, a team photo, a starter bag, 18 holes of golf with a power cart, and dinner. Jeff Stewart of Cowan Pontiac in Bowmanville will sponsor the hole-in-one, with prices like a 2009 Buick Allure, a golf trip to the Palm Coast, 36 dozen golf balls and a Nike forged titanium driver. Golfers will also have a chance to qualify for a trip to Scotland for the 2009 British Open, courtesy of Investors Group. The organization has 15 children on the waiting list. They are looking for friendships with adult mentors.
