Beaverton fair brings pet shows and talent shows to the fairgrounds Sept. 12-14

The Beaverton fairgrounds will be hopping from Sept 12 to 14.

The 155th edition of the Beaverton Fall Fair gets underway at noon Friday, Sept. 12 when the midway, vendor area, and exhibits open. All run throughout the weekend.

At 12:30 p.m., the parade of local school children will wind its way to the fairgrounds, followed by the opening ceremonies and kids' games, including tug o' war and races.

The Beaverton 4-H dairy calf show starts at 12:30 p.m. in the arena, followed by the 4-H dairy show at 1 p.m.

The spelling bee -- which will be limited to the first 12 participants in grades 3, 4 and 5 -- will be held at 3 p.m. in the curling club, followed by the 4-H garden tractor pull at 5 p.m.

The annual fair ambassador pageant -- which will include both junior and senior divisions -- will be held at 7 p.m. in the arena hall.

Some other highlights of the first day are the cat and dog shows (7 and 7:30 p.m. in the curling club) and the open garden tractor pull (7 p.m. in the arena).

Day two of the fair has an agricultural flair, with a handful of competitions slated throughout the day, including the halflinger and heavy horse show (10 a.m.), Durham West 4-H beef show (noon), and an interactive goat and sheep display (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Other attractions on the day include the gymkhana exhibition (9:30 a.m.), an arm wrestling competition (11 a.m.), cheese-making demonstrations (10 a.m., 12 and 2 p.m.) line dance lessons (1:30 and 4 p.m.) and exhibits by Nova's Arc (11:30 a.m., 12:30 and 3 p.m.) and the Toronto Zoo.

The children and adult talent shows get underway at 4 and 5 p.m., respectively, at the curling club.

The day wraps up with the ever-popular demolition derby at 8 p.m.

The final day of the fair opens with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. The morning also features a car and truck show and a baby show. Both events begin at 10 a.m.

The heavy horse draw competition wraps up the agricultural events at 1:30 p.m. before the fair closes at 4 p.m.
