Legionaires keep rolling along

OSHAWA -- The Oshawa Legionaires just keep on rolling in EOBA Junior League action.

On Wednesday they took their undefeated record to Peterborough to face the Junior Tigers and came painfully close to falling into the loss column for the first time this year.

In the first five innings the Oshawa Legionaires sure did not look like a first place club as their record indicates. The first four Peterborough batters scored as the starting Oshawa hurler Mark Phillips could not find the strike zone (his first 11 pitches were balls) and the defence committed two errors.

Peterborough added two more runs in the third to chase Phillips from the game and grab a 6-1 lead.

But Oshawa wasn't about to go away without a fight. They scored once in the six and seventh to cut the lead in half, and then exploded for five runs in the eighth to put away the Tigers 8-6 to improve their record to 17-0-1.

Matt Bursey came on in relief of Phillips and earned the victory allowing only one hit while striking out five.

Tristan Beadle had four runs batted in, including a two-run double in the eighth, to lead the offence.

Two nights earlier the Legionaires played host to the Whitby Chiefs, who made the short jaunt to Kinsmen Stadium for the evening affair. Two first inning runs by Whitby would be all they could generate and once Oshawa hit the scoreboard in the sixth, they continued on and posted a 3-2 victory.

Kyle Kotchie in relief of Andrew Bergman was the winning pitcher, tossing four innings allowing no runs, two walks and striking out nine.

Ryan Yakura and Chris Dahiroc had two hits each, while Beadle picked up the game winning RBI on a bases loaded walk.

The two games before that also saw the Legionaires emerge victorious, and by a much more comfortable margin. They defeated the High Park Braves 10-2.

Jordan Prosper started and pitched seven innings giving up both runs on six hits and a walk. He also struck out nine.

Beadle had three hits including a home run while Kevin Hussey had two hits and an RBI.

In the game prior, Oshawa shutout Newmarket by a 5-0 count with Kotchie picking up the win and Vince Carbone contributing three his and an RBI.
