DURHAM -- Residents living near the Pickering and Darlington nuclear power plants will continue to hear the sound of sirens while a new public alerting system is being tested throughout the week.
The system has been installed in a three-kilometre area around the Pickering and Darlington plants. Residents in the area may hear individual sirens being tested, which will be sounded for less than five seconds. Since it's a test, residents are not required to take any actions after hearing the sirens. They'll be tested the week of June 30, including on Canada Day, during daytime hours. For additional information, residents can contact the Public Alerting Information Line at 1-866-551-5373, or visit the Durham Emergency Management Office section of the Region's website at www.region.durham.on.ca.
