OSHAWA -- Christmas might be five months off, but now is the time to do a little shopping for Canadian soldiers.

Royal Canadian Legion, Oshawa Branch 43, is collecting for Operation Home Fires, which provides Christmas boxes of items for Canadian troops serving abroad.

Items requested are: three-quarter notepads, travel-size tissue, hand sanitizers, sun block, moisturizers, lip balm, pens, pencils, hard candy (preferably Werther's), single-serve soup, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and Crystal Light, small Canadian souvenirs, locker-size unbreakable mirrors, small puzzle books and decks of cards, small sewing kits, small manicure kits, signed postcards, unsealed letters, artwork and signed Christmas cards.

Only items on the approved list can be sent. Items not on the list will not be shipped.

The deadline is Sept. 1 and items can be left at the Legion branch, 471 Simcoe St. S., Oshawa, or by contacting Lorraine Lynch at br431leg@rogers.com or call 905-723-4511.
