Thickson Road at Hwy. 401 in Whitby will be closed for most of the day

Hydro wires down following a collision

Nov 20, 2009 - 12:03 PM

DURHAM -- Ramps on Hwy. 401 at Thickson Road in Whitby are closed, following an early morning collision which knocked down hydro lines.

The eastbound ramp to Thickson Road southbound and the westbound ramp to Thickson Road northbound and southbound will be closed for up to 12 hours as repairs are done.

Police said a single car northbound on Thickson Road came in contact with a hydro pole guy wire, pulling the pole down part way and affecting a second pole. Several live hydro wires were draped over the road but no injuries were reported, apart from minor injuries to the driver, a 46-year-old Oshawa man. Hydro crews estimate the area will be closed until approximately 6 p.m. Friday and police encourage motorists to avoid the area.

Around 8:30 a.m., the Tim Hortons plaza at Thickson Road and Champlain Avenue was closed, entry to it blocked by pylons. Power to businesses in the area was knocked out.

Drooping hydro wires could also be seen along the westbound 401 for at least 200 feet.

The collsion which caused the hydro problems occured on Thickson Road, just south of Champlain Avenue.
