AJAX -- One man is dead and another is seriously injured after a double stabbing Wednesday night in Ajax.

The hunt is on for the assailant in the incident, which occurred near a Keg restaurant at Salem and Kingston roads at about 11 p.m. The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Victor Cameron of Fletcher Avenue in Ajax.

Durham homicide detectives are working to piece together events that led to the violent outburst.

"We're still trying to get a handle on it," Detective Dave Henderson said early Thursday.

While there was early speculation the injured men were fighting each other, cops are working on an alternative theory.

"That was the original thought but my sense now is that's not the case," Det. Henderson said.

"At this stage, we're looking at a scenario involving an unidentified attacker."

According to police, a man was discovered lying on the pavement in the Keg parking lot about 11 p.m. About 45 minutes later, police were dispatched to the intersection of of Harwood Avenue and Kerrison Drive where EMS workers were attending to a man suffering from life-threatening injuries.

He was found lying outside a car. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Thursday morning Durham police, including forensic investigators, had cordoned off the parking lot. A trail of evidence markers was visible and police had erected a canopy in the vicinity of several parked vehicles including a red Dodge Charger, a black Cadillac STS and a dark Ford SUV.

The man found lying in the parking lot was transferred to a Toronto hospital.

"My understanding is he's seriously injured but he will survive," Det. Henderson said.

The investigation continues.
