CLARINGTON -- A $1,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to the charge and conviction of the owner of a severely neglected dog.
A male chow, estimated to be about four years old, was picked up by Animal Control in the area of Rundle Road and Bloor Street in Courtice late Sunday night.
Animal cruelty officer Debby Houghton was horrified at the sight of the dog, which she describes as dirty, thin and matted with its ears severely infected. The dog's nails were also horribly overgrown into its pads and there was pus and blood oozing from its entire face area and feet.
"This dog was found to be in horrific condition," Ms. Houghton said. "Whoever has been responsible for allowing this dog to be so badly neglected and has allowed this dog to suffer in the condition it was found to be in needs to be dealt with accordingly."
The dog was taken to a veterinarian on Tuesday and will be undergoing a multitude of tests for disease and other ailments.
"It's in grave condition right now -- we don't know if it will recover," Ms. Houghton added. "This is a very disturbing case of animal neglect."
Humane Society of Durham Region manager Ruby Richards says the case is one of the worst the organization has ever come across.
