OSHAWA -- Aggravated assault charges have been laid against a man arrested after a stabbing early Tuesday in central Oshawa.

A 20-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach and two others sustained minor cuts when they attempted to intervene in the dispute, which occurred at midnight at a Simcoe Street residence, Durham police said.

The stabbing victim was taken to hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries while another victim, who sustained cuts to his hands and wrist, was treated and released from hospital, police said.

William Cathcart, 31, of Gibb Street in Oshawa, is charged with aggravated assault, three counts of assault with a weapon, weapons charges and failing to comply with probation.
