Uxbridge encouraged to take garden 'stay-cation'

Event raises money for charitable group

Jul 05, 2009 - 04:38 AM

UXBRIDGE -- Organizers are encouraging residents to take a "stay-cation" this summer while raising funds for a service group.

Community Care Durham-Uxbridge is hosting its 13th annual Gardens of Uxbridge, a self-guided tour of eight private gardens in rural and urban Uxbridge, on Saturday, July 11. "Meet others who have turned their property into a retreat, or a backyard into an urban oasis," reads a release from Community Care. "It doesn't take many square feet to transform an urban corner into a sophisticated exterior space.

"Even the smallest backyard patch can become a place to refresh, relax and reconnect."

Organizers say tour patrons will observe how to "create an outdoor living space, add a vegetable garden or extend that perennial garden."

According to an overview of the featured sites, aside from flowers, tourists will also see strolling paths, a pergola, rock garden, water fountain, an ornamental fish pond and perhaps even birds and butterflies.

Tickets are $20 each, including a box lunch, available at RBC Bank (Uxbridge), Blue Heron Books, Garden Artifacts, or at the Uxbridge Seniors Centre on the day of the tour. All proceeds benefit Community Care Durham-Uxbridge, "providing practical assistance to adults (and their caregivers) who have needs related to aging and/or a physical disability."
