Local gymnasts dominate Provincial Qualifier in Oshawa

OSHAWA -- Gemini Gymnastics hosted -- and dominated -- its 2nd Provincial Qualifier of the 2008-2009 competitive season.
The Oshawa club, with athletes from all over the region, placed first overall in nine out of 10 categories and divided an amazing 81 medals among 23 athletes.
"I am proud of our Gemini athletes for their strong results at this competition," said Gemini head coach Elena Davydova. "The girls have been training hard and it's nice to see them rewarded for their hard work and dedication. I am confident our Gemini athletes will continue this momentum through the balance of this competitive season."
In level 6, age 9, Melissa Snider placed 1st on beam and floor, and 2nd on vault for 1st all-round, while Brianna Sheridan placed 1st on vault, and 2nd on bars and floor for 3rd all-round.
In level 6 age 10-11, Cailey Shewchuck placed 2nd on floor and 2nd overall while Rebecca Snider placed 3rd overall with 1st on vault and floor (tied), and 2nd (tied) on beam. Savana Storey placed 2nd (tied) on bars for 6th all-round.
Gemini athletes dominated level 7 age 9-11 with Aleeza Yu, Victoria Dobson and Nicolette Sheridan taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd all-round, respectively. Yu topped bars, beam and floor, while Dobson took 2nd for vault and bars, and Sheridan placed 3rd on beam. Rachel Bingham placed 1st on vault and 2nd on beam for an overall 6th place ranking.
Gemini's Julie Zasada placed 1st overall in level 7 age 12-13, ranking 1st on beam and floor and 2nd on bars. Shaylin Tefoglou placed 3rd on bars and floor for 4th overall.
In level 7 age 14+ Meghan Black received 1st on beam and floor, and 2nd (tied) on bars for 1st overall. Hayley Ardiel was 8th (tied) overall achieving 3rd on vault, bars and floor (tied).
In level 8 age 12-13, Gemini's Bobbi King and Michaela Dennis placed 1st and 2nd (tied) overall. King received 1st on floor and 2nd on beam, while Dennis finished 3rd on beam and floor (tied). Randi Richardson placed 2nd on vault and 3rd (tied) on bars for 6th overall, and Julia Vinkovic was ranked 11th overall.
Daijha Heron dominated level 9 age 10-13 with a 1st place finish on all four apparatus for 1st place overall. Jordyn Kent was also strong with 2nd on bars, beam and floor for an overall 2nd place finish.
For level 9 age 14+ Kellee Stephens placed 1st overall with a 1st place finish on beam, 2nd on bars and floor and 3rd (tied) on vault. Sasha Vedenin's two 1st place finishes for vault and floor (tied) gave her a 3rd place ranking overall. Katherine Partington ranked 3rd on bars and beam for 7th overall.
Gemini athletes also did well in the National categories with Natalie Vaculik and Carrina LoBello dominating the National Novice and National Open Categories. Both athletes placed 1st on all four apparatus for 1st overall in their respective categories. Riley Cholod saw a strong overall score as the only athlete in the High Performance Junior category.
Gemini Gymnastics will host its third meet later this month with an Invitational Competition on Feb. 20 and Qualifier Feb. 21-22.
