WHITBY – Whitby Dunlops defenceman Don Sanderson is in critical condition, battling to regain consciousness, after striking his head on the ice during a fight in a game Friday in Brantford.
According to the Dunlops’ website, team reps Steve Cardwell, Matt Armstrong and Justin Cardwell left the hospital Sunday afternoon to allow the family some alone time as they struggle with the tragedy.
The Dunlops played their Saturday game in Whitby wearing special stickers on their helmets to honour Sanderson, a 21-year-old from Port Perry.
Sanderson was injured in the third period Friday, a game in which the Dunlops won 5-2. They also won Saturday, 9-4 over the Orillia/Coldwater Tundras.
More information regarding Sanderson’s condition will be posted at newsdurhamregion.com as it becomes available.
