Landlord shocked by tenants murder

OSHAWA -- It was the first of the month and Patricia Gordon made a stop to pick up the rent cheque from her tenants living in a townhouse at 1010 Glen St. in Oshawa.

Yellow police tape blocked the entrance to the building and a Durham Regional Police Officer guarded the front door.

"Tell me what happened here," Ms. Gordon asked an officer. "What unit is it?"

It was unit 158. The townhouse Ms. Gordon owns. The unit she had rented out to a nice family.

Ms. Gordon had not heard about what happened to the Kelly family and she couldn't believe when she found out.

"That's really tragic. I'm sorry to hear that," Ms. Gordon said.

It all happened Saturday. Durham police were called to the complex at about 4:30 p.m. by a woman who said she had been stabbed.

Neighbours say a man named Gino crashed a small party being hosted by Rick and Leslie Kelly to celebrate their son Brandon's birthday.

According to police reports, a man, woman and two children, aged three and five, suffered stab wounds and were rushed to hospital. The knife-wielding man, identified as Gino Petralia, was later shot and killed by police after a confrontation.

Leslie Kelly, the mother of the two young boys, succumbed to her injuries soon after the brutal attack.

Ms. Gordon said the family had been living in the townhouse for just under a year and they were great tenants.
