Man busted in Regina
Nov 03, 2008 - 02:22 PM
DURHAM -- A man wanted for his alleged role in a driveway paving scam that saw dozens of Durham residents bilked last summer has been arrested in Saskatchewan.
Martin Goodwin, 47, was arrested without incident Friday night in Regina. Durham fraud detectives are expected to escort him back to this jurisdiction mid-week.
Mr. Goodwin and another man, 47-year-old Michael White, were identified as the ringleaders of a scam that saw numerous residents threatened and intimidated by paving crews that offered cut-rate paving jobs. One victim, a Bowmanville senior, was coerced into handing over $14,000 for pavement in his driveway, police said.
Several people, including Mr. White, were charged in connection with the allegations in July. He fled Ontario after being granted bail, police said.
Both men had been sought on Canada-wide warrants on charges of fraud, intimidation, threatening bodily harm and extortion.
Mr. White is still wanted by police. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-579-1520, extension 5283 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
