WHITBY -- Conservative Jim Flaherty will defend the federal riding of Whitby-Oshawa that he first won in 2006, and the field of challengers is still shaping up.
Look for Doug Anderson -- a longtime resident -- carrying the banner for the Green Party. But the Liberals and the NDP still have to name standard bearers.
The riding includes the Town of Whitby, Brooklin and the northwest corner of Oshawa. The riding runs from the north shore of Lake Ontario to the CP Rail tracks, between Lake Ridge Road and King Street West, Oshawa Creek, Rossland Road West, Simcoe Street North, Winchester Road East and Townline Road North.
The riding was formed in the 2003 redistribution from 68 per cent of Whitby-Ajax, 20 per cent of Oshawa and three per cent of Durham. The riding of Whitby-Ajax was formed in 1996 from Ontario riding and a small part of Durham riding.
The population of the riding is 112,805 people with 89,296 registered voters and 203 polling divisions.
Manufacturing is the main industry in the area. Average family income is $85,439 and the unemployment rate is 5.4 per cent.
In 2004, Liberal Judi Longfield defeated Conservative Ian MacNeil to win a third term. Conservative Jim Flaherty won the riding in 2006.
