OSHAWA -- Five years ago she was a student in high school. Now Megan de Jonge is back -- only this time she's teaching.
The 23-year-old Whitby resident will teach French to Grade 9 and 10 students at R.S. McLaughlin CVI.
"It feels weird being back in high school," said Ms. de Jonge, a Queens University graduate.
"But I had a great high school experience and that's part of the reason I wanted to become a high school teacher."
Besides teaching lessons instead of learning them, not much has changed for Ms. de Jonge since being a student at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby.
"I'm young so I can relate to my students," said Ms. de Jonge, who since moving back from Kingston has moved back in with her parents. "They'll get to know me, but I want them to know me through sports."
She did her teacher's college placement at the school and helped coach several sports teams, including field hockey, which she plans to coach this school year.
Ms. de Jonge starts her first year of teaching Sept. 2, and jokes that the first lesson she has planned is to teach the students how to spell her name.
